Hi guys. I pretty green here, so forgive if I've posted this in the wrong spot...

I am switching from the regular OFH to the front facing, and will be getting the

VMC-Spec Oil Filter Relocation Kit https://volkmetalcraft.com/product/vmc-spec-oil-filter-relocation-kit-and-oil-cooler-kit/​


But I wondered what this knob on the OEM housing is. It's not present on the front facing, nor is there any provisions for it.

What it helps is warming of the oil from a cold state. Your oil will reach operating temp much faster with that valve in place because it's not routing all of your oil through the cooler before it needs to, allowing it to warm up faster. They were more prevalent in cooler climates.

If you're ok with it taking longer to reach operating temperature because it's always being cooled, even when it doesn't need to be/shouldn't be, that's up to you.

Makes good sense. Thank you. I'm in Colorado(obviously), but none of the tracks run during winter. Should be ok, I think.
I'm not exactly sure what direction I have planned for this car, but I do want all the good mods done, so I have the options. 👍
 
Hopefully you always let your car warm up sufficiently before driving it hard anyway. Getting the oil warmed quickly is definitely beneficial for a daily driven car that you just start up and go every day.

I own an old Chevy Tahoe w 356k miles on it. The Only way it's lasted this long is the old trick dad taught me... start it and sit. Sit and wait for the RPMs to drop to nominal operating range. That way, you know all the oil has gotten to all parts of the engine.
I most certainly will be doing the same with the Talon. Thanks much you input, though. Good advice.

Sorry totally no offence, just a little correction for the future reference.
It's opposite, it's not to open, it's to close. While the oil is cold, it's taking both routes (cooler bypass port and cooler) to get into the engine. When the oil temp get hot, the cooler bypass valve will close off the cooler bypass port to let most of oil to go through the cooler.

Oh, ok. Welp, I'm swapping it out regardless. But thank you for all the info. It's been decades since I last had a DSM. 🙂

Where in Colorado? I am in Commerce City if you get to a point you need help with tuning.

Excellent. I may have to drop you a line when I start tuning. I just got the car last month, and just doing small stuff around the engine bay until I pull it out. I'm getting rid of the ABS and need to route new lines. Fun.
